The basics

What Is YouTube Trending?

YouTube's trending page surfaces videos that are gaining unusual traction right now, within a specific country. It is not the same as your personalized recommendations — recommendations are built around your individual watch history, while trending reflects what a broad, local audience is currently paying attention to.

Trends differ by country because audiences, languages, and cultural moments differ by country. A video doesn't need the most total views to trend — what matters more is how quickly it's gaining views and engagement relative to typical performance. That's also why trending status isn't permanent: a video can rise and fall from the list within hours as fresher content takes its place. For creators, this makes the trending list a useful, constantly refreshing snapshot of what's currently resonating — a starting point for research rather than a fixed ranking.

Not personalized

Trending reflects broad audience attention, not your individual watch history.

Changes by the hour

A video's trending status can shift as newer content gains momentum.

Local by design

Each country has its own trending list shaped by its own audience.

Behind the list

How YouTube Trending Works

YouTube doesn't publish an exact trending formula, but a combination of signals consistently shows up in videos that trend. Here are the factors that tend to matter most:

View velocity

How quickly a video accumulates views in a short window matters more than its total view count.

Viewer engagement

Likes, comments, and other interactions signal that an audience is actively responding, not just watching.

Freshness

Newly published videos can gain momentum quickly, which is part of why trending lists shift throughout the day.

Audience interest

Certain topics, events, or releases naturally attract more attention during particular periods.

Geographic differences

A video trending in the US may barely register in Morocco, Brazil, or Japan — trends are local by nature.

Category

Music, gaming, entertainment, and news each have very different baseline viewing and engagement patterns.

YouTube Trends by Country

YouTube trends can vary significantly between regions — driven by language, culture, current events, local creators, music preferences, sports, and regional audience behavior. What's trending on YouTube in the US can look completely different from what's trending in India, Brazil, or Japan. Our checker lets you compare trending videos across 21 countries side by side:

By topic

YouTube Trending Categories

Trends behave differently across categories — a viral gaming clip and a viral news story spread for very different reasons. Here's what tends to drive each of the 14 categories we track:

How to Use YouTube Trends for Content Ideas

Trending data is most valuable when it feeds into your own content research. Every trending video card in this tool shows its tags, which you can view and copy directly — a legitimate shortcut for understanding how a video is being discovered.

Identify emerging topics before they saturate your niche

Spot popular subjects your audience is already searching for

Discover content formats that are currently resonating

Research what competitors in your category are publishing

Compare categories to see where engagement runs highest

Identify regional differences to tailor content by market

Understanding the numbers

What Is YouTube Engagement Rate?

Engagement rate measures how actively an audience responds to a video, not just how many people watched it.

Engagement Rate = (Likes + Comments) ÷ Views × 100

A higher rate can indicate a more responsive, invested audience — but views alone don't tell the whole story, and engagement is most meaningful when compared within the same category, since baseline rates vary widely between, say, music videos and news clips. Engagement is a useful signal, not a guaranteed measure of quality.

Like Rate

Likes as a share of total views.

Comment Rate

Comments as a share of total views.

Engagement Rate

Likes and comments combined, as a share of total views.

How to Identify Viral YouTube Videos

A high view count alone doesn't necessarily mean a video is currently trending or viral — it could simply be an old video that accumulated views over years. Viral videos tend to show several of these signals at once:

Rapid view growth

Views climbing far faster than the channel's typical pace.

High engagement

Likes and comments arriving at an unusually high rate relative to views.

Recent publication

Most viral spikes happen within the first hours or days after upload.

Views far above subscribers

A video reaching well beyond the channel's existing audience size.

Strong audience response

Comment sections showing active discussion, not just passive views.

Popularity within a niche

Standing out specifically within its own country and category, not just overall.

An important distinction

YouTube Trends vs. Personalized Recommendations

Trending

What's broadly gaining attention right now, within a given country — the same list for every viewer in that region, refreshed continuously.

Recommendations

Content YouTube predicts an individual viewer wants to watch, based on their own watch history — different for every person.
